My current regimen

Posted on: August 14, 2006 | Posted in: Hypothyroid Supplements, My Story

Well, here’s what I’m going to be taking starting later this week (when my old vitamin packs run out):

Morning:

  • Thyromine (thyroid/adrenal glandular with supportive herbs and amino acids)
  • TwinLab Women’s Ultra Daily Multivitamin (has a lot of herbal ingredients on top of a very complete multi-vit … including selenium and 100% iodine) [added: I read the back of the bottle, and realized the values on the label were for a dose of FOUR capsules. So I'm taking two, which is still more than 100% of most things.]
  • NOW B-50 (I’m debating whether I need this … The TwinLab multi covers the same nutrients as the B-50. But I figure that just means it’s the equivalent of taking a B-100, right?)
  • Schiff “Guided Mineral” Cal-Mag-Zinc (chelated, plus Vit. D for proper absorption) [added: You're supposed to take two of these as well. Eep!]

Mid afternoon: 30mg Armour
Late afternoon: 30mg Armour
Bedtime: 45mg Armour

I figure taking all my vitamins and birth control in the morning places it as far as possible from interfering with any of my Armour doses, and the Thyromine helps tide my energy levels over ’till the next Armour.

I’ve been doing this approximate schedule for a couple weeks now, with my old multivitamin packs, and I’m interested to see if I notice any definite changes with the new vitamins. I was on a Schiff ‘all-purpose’ multi-vitamin daily packet, with 6 pills plus the Thyromine and birth control … it was a bit much to swallow first thing in the morning, so I’d split the packets into 3 pills one day and 3 other pills the next day, never getting the whole thing at once.

I’m hoping getting on a more consistent “same thing every day” routine might help my energy levels a bit more! As it is, I feel like I’ve been battling sleepiness ever since I switched to Armour, compared to the synthetic levothyroxine. Although taking the Armour in three doses is working better than two, and the Thyromine helps a *bunch* it’s still frustrating to feel drowsy in the middle of the day.

So, if the new vitamins don’t make a major difference, I may ask for a combination levo/Armour prescription next time I see the doc … but I’m getting SO tired of changing my prescription EVERY SINGLE TIME I go in to get my test results, I’m hoping things will pick up/even out soon.

Also: Coming Soon! I got a copy of my medical records from my clinic … I don’t know where I got the idea my starting TSH was only ~14. It was 150 the first time I was tested. Holy cow! So, I’m going to write up a little table of “Test Result X –> Prescription Y –> Test Result Z” etc., along with notes about symptoms as I recall them (and according to my doc’s notes).

About

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the front of your neck, just below your adam's apple. Thyroid hormones control the body's metabolism. When it doesn't produce enough hormones, you have hypothyroidism.
